Barometers

A barometer is an instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure. Around the middle of the 17th century experiments by Galileo and Torricelli found that a tube of mercury with one end plugged and turned upside down, the open end of the tube immersed in a container of more mercury, remained full to the height of around 29” and that the varying atmospheric pressure would raise or lower this column of mercury. A scale could be applied to this tube of mercury, and thus it was possible to see variations in the atmospheric pressure, in inches mercury, which aided weather prediction.
