A fine, small, mahogany longcase clock by Clarke of Dorchester. The pretty 12” painted dial features an automata rocking ship in the arch, subsidiary seconds and calendar. Original matching blued steel hands and striking the hours on a bell.
The simple case has good veneers, colour and patination and features a break-arch hood and a double plinth to the base.
There were several Clarkes working in Dorset. This one is probably J.Clarke who is listed as working in Dorchester between 1790 and 1870. He is also listed as a gunsmith and whitesmith (metalworker).
